The final countdown to UEFA Euro 2024 has officially begun as we approach a string of highly anticipated international friendlies. Some of the nations that are playing this week are heading for the big tournament and others aren’t, but either way, it’s important for all of them to try and build some momentum. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the impending clash between Austria and Serbia.
Austria Form GuideThey’ve always been a dangerous kind of opponent, but Austria haven’t quite been able to get over the hump and become a consistent force. The likes of David Alaba have always pushed hard for them to get to that next level but for now, they’re just a ‘middle of the road’ team in Europe, always striving to prove they can get out of the shadow of some of their neighbours.
Austria were part of Group F which, in many ways, was pretty tricky on paper. Alas, they didn’t let it get to them, as they wound up finishing 2nd behind Belgium. They only lost one game throughout the entire campaign, which is impressive given Sweden were also in their group.
Serbia Form GuideBizarrely, despite qualifying for three of the last four World Cup tournaments, Serbia haven’t been able to qualify for the Euros since breaking away from Montenegro. They certainly have a good structure and many would argue that they have an impressive squad, but sometimes, that isn’t always enough - although, you can bet they’ll be putting their best foot forward in this one.
Serbia finished in 2nd place in qualifying, slotting in neatly behind Hungary. They did have to face some tough tests throughout and Montenegro pushed them all the way, but they kept their composure to ensure their place in Germany this summer.
Match PredictionIn a game like this, the whole point is to do everything in your power to make an impact - but at the same time, there are far more important matches that lie ahead. Therefore, while we do think there will be some big moments here and there, our official prediction is under 2.5 goals scored.
